A remarkable mother dog, who had recently given birth, walked 3 kilometers a day in search of food to feed her 10 hungry puppies. Her journey was long and exhausting, but thanks to the compassion of one determined rescuer, Betty Boop and her puppies are safe and will soon find their forever homes.
In Fowler, Fresno, California, locals began to notice a mother dog, Betty Boop, walking 2 miles daily in search of food for her newborn pups. Word spread, and Krystle Woodward, the founder of the animal rescue group Pinky Paws ResQ, learned about Betty Boop’s plight. People reported seeing her foraging along the outskirts of town, tirelessly looking for food to nourish her litter.
Krystle had heard about the dog’s struggles two months prior, but efforts to capture her were unsuccessful. That was until last Thursday when Krystle’s persistence finally paid off, and she was able to rescue Betty Boop and her 10 puppies.
“I surprised Betty Boop during my break at work,” Krystle shared on Pinky Paws ResQ’s Facebook page. “She fled when I found her, but my husband rushed in the van to grab her and save Betty Boop during my lunch hour.”
For the past few weeks, over 30 people had witnessed Betty Boop trekking for miles each day to find food for her pups. Krystle knew that time was critical and worked quickly to bring Betty Boop to safety.
After rescuing Betty Boop, Krystle rushed her to the vet for a thorough check-up. “I stayed at the vet until late at night,” Krystle recalled. “I needed to be sure she wasn’t infected. I cried all night when the doctor confirmed she was breastfeeding. I was terrified those puppies would starve to death.”
The very next day, Betty Boop tried to escape from her new shelter, desperately climbing a fence to return to her puppies. Krystle knew she had to find them, and she immediately set out on a mission to reunite the mother with her pups.
Thanks to Krystle’s determination and the help of a young friend, Kenneth Stoen, the puppies were discovered in the basement of an abandoned building. Krystle’s friend’s son had called in to assist with the rescue, ensuring the puppies were safely brought to safety.
All 10 puppies are healthy and thriving. They were named Amber, Citrine, Copper, Jade, Jasper, Onyx, Opal, Pearl, Rubyloo, and Sage.
Krystle was deeply moved by the bond between Betty Boop and her puppies. “She just trusted me to show me where her babies were, and that pierced my heart,” Krystle said. “That’s why I adore them.”
Betty Boop and her puppies have now found safety and comfort, and their journey is just beginning. With love and care, they will soon be ready for adoption, and their story will inspire kindness and compassion for animals everywhere.
