Dog Tied to Pole Reaches Out Paw to the Cop Who Came to Save Him
Officer Angela Laurella responded to a report of two dogs chained to poles on a dead-end street in Pompano, Florida. The details were scarce—no one knew how long the dogs had been left there or who had abandoned them, and there were no cameras in the area. However, Officer Laurella realized that with the temperature soaring above 100°F, there was no time to waste.
She rushed to the scene, where she found a weak gray dog clinging to a pole so tightly that he could barely move. Amy Roman, president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, shared with The Dodo: “He was tied to a pole with a very short leash. He was emaciated, dehydrated, and every bone and rib protruded.”
The dog, who would later be named Liam, instinctively reached out his paw to the officer as she slowly approached. “She just walked slowly toward him and reached out her hand, and he kind of cowered and gave her his paw, as if to say, ‘Please help me get out of here,’” Roman explained.
Realizing that Liam needed special care, Officer Laurella immediately sought help from the rescue organization, despite them being overwhelmed with other cases. Roman and her team at 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida were more than happy to step in and help.
Now in Roman’s care, Liam is recuperating after several vet appointments. This 17-pound pocket bulldog is steadily gaining strength and enjoying meals like boiled chicken and rice, prepared by volunteers. “He’s always getting so much affection,” Roman said. “He’s fed every hour on the hour, so his body becomes accustomed to it… He’s having a fantastic time right now.”
Although Liam still has a long road ahead of him with continued vet appointments, he’s already become a ray of sunshine. “He loves everyone, and this dog doesn’t have a mean bone in his body,” Roman added. “That says it all to me, because after everything he’s been through, he’s still so grateful and forgiving.”
Liam’s story is just one of many in Florida, where animals are being abandoned or surrendered by their owners. Roman hopes that pet owners will reach out to shelters and rescues before deciding they can no longer care for their pets.
Liam’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of second chances. He continues to reach out to people, ready for a life with a loving family.
“I believe canines like Liam can teach humanity a thing or two,” Roman remarked. “It only restores your faith.”
