Maru, a brave Bullmastiff, embarked on an incredible journey to find her owner after being abandoned, walking 125 miles through harsh conditions with “tears in her eyes.” Her story is one of resilience, love, and heartbreaking betrayal.

Maru was adopted by a couple in Novosibirsk, Russia, when she was just five months old. However, after six months, the couple contacted Alla Morozova, who owns a local animal shelter, saying they could no longer care for her due to animal allergies. Alla’s policy was clear—adopted dogs were her responsibility, and owners were to contact her if they couldn’t keep the dog. Despite her commitment to keeping Maru, the couple returned her to the shelter.

In an effort to bring Maru back, the shelter arranged for the dog to be sent back on a train, with an assistant accompanying her. But something unimaginable happened during the journey. Around 125 miles (201 km) into the trip, the train stopped at a station near Achinsk. Maru, afraid and overwhelmed by the noise of the train, bolted from the compartment, causing chaos. Despite the efforts to restrain her, she managed to escape and run free.

The shelter staff quickly alerted the couple, asking them to help search for the dog in the Achinsk area, but the couple, uninterested and careless, refused to get involved. Maru was now on her own, and she began her desperate trek toward Krasnoyarsk, determined to find the home she had once known.

For two and a half days, Maru wandered the Russian wilderness, facing countless dangers, including brown bears and wolves. When she was finally discovered in an industrial district of Krasnoyarsk, she was bruised, exhausted, and in pain. Her rescuers described her as having “tears in her eyes” as she sought the house where she had once been loved, only to be abandoned.

Despite having no geographical reference point and having never wandered far from her original yard, Maru’s determination to return home was extraordinary. Her paws and lips were injured, and she was limping from the arduous journey. She had even fallen off a train embankment along the way. But despite her injuries, it was clear that her desire to reunite with her former owners kept her going.

Now safely back at the shelter in Novosibirsk, Maru is undergoing treatment for her injuries and therapy to recover from the trauma she endured. Although her journey was long and heartbreaking, Maru is slowly healing, and she is surrounded by the love and care she deserves.

Maru’s story is a reminder of the deep bonds that can form between animals and humans and the incredible lengths a dog will go to for love. Her perseverance against all odds is a testament to her strength and her unwavering hope for a life filled with love and care.
