Golden Retriever Abandoned at Beach with 46-Pound Tumor, Finds Hope and Love

Imagine being a homeless dog, abandoned by the very family you once trusted, and then suffering from a massive growth on your body. This was the heartbreaking reality for Henry, a Golden Retriever, found abandoned on a beach in Newport, California.

To make matters worse, Henry was carrying a 46-pound tumor on his side, a growth that made it nearly impossible for him to walk. His tumor was pressing against his right front leg, making even the simplest task of walking or finding food incredibly difficult. Yet, despite his pain and suffering, Henry remained a cheerful, loving dog, always wagging his tail and slobbering kisses on anyone who got close.

Luckily, a kind stranger found Henry strolling on the beach and alerted Valerie Schomburg of Newport Beach Animal Control. The rescuers were stunned by the sight of Henry—used to rescuing stray dogs in poor conditions, they were not prepared for the sight of a dog so severely affected by a tumor.

With the help of grants and generous donations, Schomburg was able to raise enough funds for Henry to undergo surgery to remove the massive tumor. While the tumor was malignant, it had not spread, and the surgery was a success. After the surgery, Henry felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders—literally. He dropped down to a healthy 78 pounds and regained the ability to walk with ease.

Henry went on to live with a loving foster family through the Newport Beach Animal Shelter, where he quickly became a local superstar. His story touched hearts around the world, and he gained a large following of supporters who sent him presents, snacks, and messages of gratitude for inspiring them.

Though Henry’s life was tragically cut short, he lived his final days to the fullest, showered with love and care. He passed away quietly in his sleep, but not before showing the world what resilience, joy, and love look like. His bright smile and constant tail-wagging were a testament to his limitless enthusiasm for life.

While his passing is incredibly sad, there’s been a glimmer of justice. Through further investigation, authorities were able to track down Henry’s previous owner, who has been charged by the OC District Attorney’s Office.
