Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference. For one dog in Independence, Missouri, that moment came when David Fredman was on his way to work and spotted a disturbing sight near the I-70 bridge.
Fredman was driving when he saw what appeared to be a dog hanging from an electrical cord attached to an electrical box. “I spotted what seemed to be a dog swinging from the edge of some type of electrical box,” Fredman recalled. “He was certainly strangled by the cord. His feet were on the ground, but barely touching. He was trying to shift his head left and right but couldn’t.”
Without hesitation, Fredman called 911 and grabbed a knife to free the dog. As soon as he cut the cord, the dog struggled to breathe, but Fredman acted quickly to calm him down. The dog was unable to walk, so Fredman carefully took him to KC Pet Project for immediate help.
The dog was found to be microchipped, and the rescue team was able to track down his owner, Dee Vaughn. It turned out that the dog, named Max, had been missing for two hours before he was discovered. Vaughn was overjoyed to hear that Max had been found but was deeply saddened to learn what had happened to his 16-year-old dog.
The circumstances surrounding Max’s plight remain unclear. Was it an unfortunate accident, or was there malicious intent behind the situation? Vaughn believes that his older dog couldn’t have traveled the mile to where he was found on his own. The fact that Max had an electrical cord wrapped around his neck suggests something suspicious. Vaughn mentioned that security camera footage might help shed light on how this happened. He also shared that he had contacted the police, who advised him to reach out to animal control, which he plans to do.
Despite the uncertainty, Vaughn is just grateful that Max is safe, thanks to Fredman’s quick thinking and bravery. He had the chance to thank Fredman in person, saying, “Thank you, David, very much. You stopped your job to turn back and save my dog’s life.”
Max’s rescue is a reminder of the power of kindness and the importance of staying alert in times of need. We are all fortunate that Fredman was in the right place at the right time, able to save a life that could have been lost.
