Rescue Dog Who Escaped Twice and Survived on Streets of New Orleans is Back Safe at Home

A rescue dog who spent several months surviving on the streets of New Orleans is now back home safe. The tiny terrier mix, Scrim, managed to escape not once, but twice, surviving hurricanes, streetcars, blizzards, and even being shot. Throughout his adventures, Scrim’s fame grew, and he became a bona fide local celebrity.

Scrim was rescued from being euthanized at a shelter by Michelle Chermaie, who runs Zeus’ Rescues, in April of last year. While in foster care, the two-year-old dog managed to escape and spent 177 days on the run. Despite having a GPS collar, the battery died, but local residents banded together, tracking his movements until he was finally found in late October. During his time on the run, Scrim was shot but managed to recover. In recognition of his resilience, the New Orleans City Council honored him.

Just days after being found, Scrim escaped again, this time from Michelle’s home. He jumped out of her second-story window, falling 13 feet to the yard below, then squeezed through the gate and ran away once more.

Michelle later appeared on The Tamron Hall Show and explained that Scrim was suffering from what’s known as “lost dog syndrome,” where a dog perceives anything as a threat. She added, “He’s just running for his life,” but noted that when he’s in a home, he’s a snuggly dog.

During his second escape, Scrim faced freezing temperatures, near-misses with streetcars, and numerous other dangers. Yet, just like before, locals again rallied to help, sending Michelle text messages around the clock to report sightings of Scrim. Eventually, she received the text she had been waiting for: “Caught Scrim.”

Michelle is now caring for him and ensuring that safety precautions are in place. These include a new GPS collar and an air tag to prevent further escapes.

After being more elusive than Bigfoot, Scrim is finally home, and this time, it looks like he’s staying for good.
