A heartwarming story of reunion unfolded when a mother and son drove hundreds of miles to bring Piper, a sweet dog, back to her military family after three long years apart.
In 2018, when Becca Brown’s husband, a member of the United States Air Force, was deployed to Germany, the family knew they’d have to move to Europe. Unfortunately, they couldn’t take their beloved dog, Piper, a three-year-old blue heeler/Labrador mix, with them.
Piper had been a cherished member of the family, but Becca and her family didn’t want to put the dog’s new family in a difficult position by having to take her away from them later on. As Becca explained to the Pensacola News Journal, “We didn’t want someone to fall in love with her only to have us take her away three years later.”
“It didn’t have to be temporary,” Becca explained to the Pensacola News Journal. “We didn’t want someone to fall in love with her only to have us take her away three years later.”
So, the family arranged for Piper to move to Kansas with a man she had formed a bond with. The man sent updates about Piper’s life, reassuring the Browns that she was doing well in her new home.
Imagine their surprise when a veterinary office in Oklahoma contacted them, saying that Piper had been found roaming the streets.
“We were mostly stunned,” Becca said. “We were just like, ‘Oh.’ Wow. This was not at all what we expected. They were doing well last we heard… We weren’t expecting this.”
It turned out that Carla Olmstead’s son had found Piper on the street a month earlier. The dog had jumped into his car and refused to get out. Piper got along with everyone in the Olmstead family, including their cats and dog, and they quickly fell in love with her.
“She is the sweetest, most polite dog we’ve ever met,” Carla wrote on Facebook. “She was kind to our cats and dog. She adores people.”
We can all imagine their surprise when a vet’s office in Oklahoma called to inform them that Piper had been found in the streets.
“We were mostly stunned,” Becca explained. “We were just like, ‘Oh.’” Wow. This was not at all what we expected. They were doing well last we heard… We weren’t expecting this.”
It became clear to the Olmstead family that Piper must have been well-loved and trained by her previous owners. After discovering Piper had a microchip, they initially had trouble contacting her owners. However, after trying again a few weeks later, they were able to reach the Browns and learn about Piper’s history.
Overjoyed, the Brown family reunited with their long-lost dog, and the Olmstead family, full of love for Piper, traveled to Florida for a beach trip to return her to her original family in Pensacola.
Though Piper was initially shy and missed the family who had found her, she gradually settled back into her old life, and the reunion was full of happiness. The Browns, now with triplets in the family, had plenty of opportunities for play with Piper.
This story is a beautiful reminder of the power of love and loyalty. Watch the sweet reunion in the video below!
