The Best Life is Now for a Small Dog with a Huge Tumor Who Was Surrendered for Euthanasia

Sadly, owner-surrenders are an all-too-common reality in shelters across the country. People abandon or return their pets for a variety of reasons—everything from financial struggles and housing issues to allergies or simple apathy toward the animal. It’s heartbreaking, especially for dogs like Hattie, who were left behind without much hope.

In 2018, Hattie—a small dog with a huge tumor growing on her left side—was surrendered by her owners to a local shelter in Dallas. The tumor had been growing for two years, and her owners had never sought treatment. It was a painful sight for anyone who saw her, and unfortunately, they wanted to euthanize her.

Luckily, Dallas DogRRR—Rescue.Rehab.Reform—stepped in to offer her a chance at a better life. The rescue team was shocked and saddened by her condition, but they were determined to give Hattie the care she so desperately needed.

A Risky but Miraculous Surgery

The tumor was a massive growth, putting considerable strain on Hattie’s body, especially her legs. It was clear that she couldn’t live like this much longer, so the rescue arranged for her to see the experts at Vet Ranch, a facility that provides veterinary care for abandoned animals.

The situation was delicate. The tumor had been pressing on blood vessels and muscles for so long that her ability to walk was severely compromised. The surgery to remove the tumor was risky, but the team was hopeful. Dr. Karri from Vet Ranch expressed how heartbreaking it was that Hattie had been “just coping with this” for so long.

The surgery was a success, and the tumor, which weighed an astonishing 15 pounds (about half of Hattie’s body weight), was finally removed. It was an incredible relief for Hattie, who now had a much brighter future ahead of her.

Tumor-Free and Happy

With the tumor gone, Hattie quickly started to show signs of improvement. Though she still had some medical issues to manage, her quality of life skyrocketed. The tough little dog, with her cheerful spirit, adjusted to her new reality and learned to move around more freely.

By December 2018, Hattie found her forever home. She was adopted by a loving family who adored her. Her new family shared a post on Facebook saying, “She lives in a home with a yard, has a huge fur sister, and enjoys free reign of the house. She sleeps in a king-size bed every night. [Hattie] has had some medical issues, but we go to the vet regularly to keep her monitored.”

Once surrendered and seemingly hopeless, Hattie is now living her best life. Though the medical care she received played a huge role, the real heroes are the people who recognized that she deserved more than what she was given and stepped in to make sure she got the love and care she needed.

Today, Hattie is a happy, healthy senior dog enjoying her golden years with her new family, proving that even the most difficult situations can have a happy ending when compassion and care are involved.
