Topper, an eight-year-old dog, has faced unimaginable horrors that most of us could never fathom. He survived a horrific tragedy where three of his family members were murdered, and a fourth tragically took their own life. Amidst this chaos, Topper was the sole survivor, and his story of survival is nothing short of extraordinary.
After the devastating events, Topper was found in a desperate and haunting position—on the roof of a decaying house, guarding the remnants of his family’s home. He had crawled out of a window, too traumatized and heartbroken to leave, but still somehow holding on to life. His rescue made national headlines as a crane had to be used to bring him down to safety.
Now, despite the trauma he has endured, Topper is facing yet another heartbreaking challenge: he is set to be euthanized at Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC) unless he finds a loving home. Having been in the shelter for six months, Topper has shown his gentle, loving nature and is eager for affection, yet his loyalty to his caregivers has caused him to become protective of his space. He has grown attached to a volunteer, and due to this bond, he would need to be the only dog in his future home.
Topper is a calm, intelligent, and inquisitive dog who loves agility exercises and food puzzles. His playful trot and joyful bounce show the spirit that still thrives within him, despite everything he’s been through. His heart is full of love, and all he needs now is a home where he can heal and grow.
